Sony Ericsson unveils Xperia X10 – awesome specs, has potential.

Sony Ericsson today launched the Xperia X3 Xperia X10. Not sure why the jump in the number, maybe to avoid confusion with Nokia X3.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

This gorgeous looking device has amazing hardware which is right up-there with the other elite devices:

  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm.
  • 4 inch capacitive touch display.
  • 8.1 Mega pixel camera with LED flash.
  • 1500 mAh battery, 3.5mm headphone jack, 8GB microSD memory card.

On the software front, it has a lot to get excited about. If Sony Ericsson can iron out the performance issues and other bugs currently present on the unfinished software, it can be a treat to use.

The device is powered by Android 1.6 (not 2.0) but is completely revamped with their own interface. The Rachael UI which we covered earlier is being called the UX, which stands for UserXperience.

What makes the UI stand out apart from the visual treat are some new features like:

  • Timescape – It essentialy collates all your communication across all social media spaces and presents it seamlessly in one place.
  • Mediascape – Simply put, this is Timescape for all your multimedia content.
  • Face recognition – Ah yes! another cool idea. Once you tag someone, it recognises them and tags automatically the next time. You can even call a person by tapping on their face when viewing a pic.

Though the interface was laggy and extremely slow, it can be blamed on the early build of the OS which will surely be optimised. The same can be said about the battery life as the Snapdragon 1GHz processor proved out to be quite hungry.

Google Maps and the Internet browser were already optimised and were snappy and responsive giving a taste of what the release model may feel like.

However, none of these can compensate for the glaring absence of multi-touch rotation and pinch zoom features.
