Motorola Droid – blazingly fast, without breaking a sweat!

Verizon’s much anticipated/hyped Motorola device – Droid (a.k.a Sholes) comes out of hiding and gives us some info on what lies beneath the shiny (and boxy) appearance.

Boy Genius is quite impressed with the phone and threw a plethora of superlatives to describe it.

As mentioned earlier it does run on Android 2.0.

The build quality is very good. The keyboard slides smoothly and the phone feels sturdy. It has a massive capacitive display. It is also one of the best displays on any Android device we’ve seen so far.

It’s the thinnest phone with a qwerty sliding keyboard till date. To put things in perspective, it is just slightly thicker than the iPhone 3GS. The qwerty keyboard has rubberised keys which are very usable. Mind you, Motorola says the keyboard design isn’t final and there may be some changes, so we’ll reserve our opinion for later.

It is the fastest Android device by far which raises the bar considerably for all Android devices to meet (forget beating it). The blistering pace of the device can be attributed to two things in general:

  • The TI OMAP3430 processor it runs on.
  • Android 2.0. To be more precise, Google had a direct hand in the development of the device influencing every key design element of the phone.

This is the show piece for Google to flaunt its OS and cement it in consumers’ minds.

There is a desktop cradle included in the phone box which transforms the Droid into a ‘multimedia station’, displaying info like time, weather etc.

From the first impressions, we can safely say that Motorola has a winner here. We’ll keep you updated when more details surface and of course the pricing, once it is announced.
