Get your On-Page Search Engine Optimization basics right!

Its every firm’s’ dream come true to have their website show up at a higher rank on Google for keywords important to their business domain. Assume you are a washing machine manufacturer, when your potential customer  is deciding on which affordable brand to buy, they are likely to Google the keywords  “cheapest-washing-machine”, “affordable-washing-machine”,  “washer-dryers” etc.  On clicking any of these keywords, if your website shows up at one of the top  positions on Google you stand a better chance of attracting the prospective consumer to your site. On the other hand, if your competitor’s sites  show up before yours, then they take away the cake!

So how do you make sure that you don’t lose out the prospect to your competitor on Google? The answer is  Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Its extremely important to get your SEO right and before thinking about off-page SEO techniques its important to apply it on-page. By this I mean getting the basics of your site like page titles, meta descriptions and meta keywords right.

For the time being lets think of page titles. During Christmas time your prospective customer is more likely to enter the keywords “cheapest-washing-machine”, “washing-machine-offers” or “washing machine discounts”. So as a company if you have Christmas discount collection for sale on your website and your title reads just “washing machines at low prices” then you are making a mistake. Competitors who have been smart enough to put titles like “Christmas offer: find the cheapest washing machines inside”  strike the gold.

Why is it so important you ask? Think about it, Google as a business wants its searchers to get exactly what they are looking for. If they fail to do this, they might end up losing searchers. Now imagine you are at a supermarket and go hunting for “Heinz chicken and country” soup. If you asked an employee for assistance you would be thankful if she directed you to baked beans, noodles and soup aisle, happy if you were taken straight to the soup section, happier if you were taken and pointed to the Heinz soup section and absolutely impressed if you were given ‘Heinz chicken and country” soup right in your hand.

It goes without saying Google is all about making life easy and impresses most of its users by taking them closest to the information they want. So understanding this fundamental fact is extremely crucial for any businesses. Keyword rich original content  and getting the page titles, meta descriptions and meta keywords spot-on so as to enable Google to know what the page exactly contains is the name of the game. Web based firm’s need to understand this and get their on-page search engine optimization basics right before spending countless dollars on offline-page SEO only to see a negligible increase in traffic.
