How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware using PwnageTool for mac

by Rohit on June 19, 2009

UPDATE: I recommend everyone to use redsn0w instead of pwnage tool to jailbreak your iPhone.. The process is much more smooth sailing.. People have hardly had any hiccups using it.  And YEAH it works for both the mac and windows.

Here’s the link to the tutorial for jailbreaking using redsn0w

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

If you still fancy PwnageTool then here are the steps:

1. Download  iTunes 8.2 and update your iPhone to the latest 3.0 firmware.

2. Download PwnageTool 3.0 from any of the pwnage download links on http://blog.iphone-dev.org.  I used this link http://d01.megashares.com/dl/b9276a6/PwnageTool_3.0.dmg

3. Open PwnageTool and select the Expert mode.

4. Select your iPhone model  and click on the blue arrow.

5. Your computer will automatically detect the iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware.

6. From the six choices on the screen, select “general” and click the blue arrow to continue.

7. You will see 3 choices on the screen. Select/Check enable baseband update . Keep all other options unchecked. Also set the root partition to roughly 700 mb and click next.

8. You will then reach the bootneuter settings, without fiddling with any settings just go straight ahead and click the blue arrow.

9. You will then reach the cydia settings where you can download any packages so that you can save the trouble of downloading them individually later. Click next.

10. You will then reach the boot logo settings. Just skip this step and click the blue “build” button to start building your own IPSW file.

11. Save the custom firmware(IPSW file)  either on desktop or anyother folder of your choice and wait for about 20 mins for it to be built.

12. Enter your administrator password.

13. Whether or not your iPhone has been pwned before just select NO on the next screen.

14. Keep your iPhone  connected to your computer and switch it off, when indicated.

15. Now the part where you have to pay rapt attention and follow directions to enter DFU mode.

i) Hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds.

ii)Release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds.

16. On doing this you will get a notification that reads successfully entered DFU mode. .

17. Now close PwnageTool and open iTunes. iTunes will notify that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Select ok.

18. In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click restore simultaneously. A new window will open where you can select the custom firmware that you built in step 11.

19. iTunes will then restore your iPhone 3G using the custom firmware in about 20 minutes.

20. You will then get the option of setting up your iPhone either as a new phone or from backup.

21.Now just restart your iPhone and you will find cydia on your springboard. Hurray you are done :)

maddy June 20, 2009 at 6:15 am

theman June 20, 2009 at 7:05 am

so do I choose new phone or restore from backup

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 7:23 am

@William if your iPhone doesn’t detect the 3.0 firmware automatically.. Download it from:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6578.20090617.VfgtU/iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
and place it on your desktop. Then during step 5 browse for it manually and select the file.

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 7:27 am

@cfhuiewhvcuef After pressing Alt/Option key and holding restore at the same time, did you select the new ipsw that you created in step 11. Just lemme knw wat exactly u did so that u can help me help you..

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 7:30 am

@theman It’s better if you choose new phone instead of restoring from backup to avoid the mess..

John June 20, 2009 at 7:57 am

Thanks Rohit this worked like a charm. But I want to tell your readers that this method is only suitable for 3g phones and not 2g. I know it’s in the title but many just try on their 2g iPhones and mess up. Also if any of you out there are beginners to jailbreaking, I would suggest you to wait for quickpwn which can be used on both windows and mac.

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 8:03 am

Yea you are right John the best bet would be to wait for quickpwn and as you mentioned this method should be used ONLY FOR IPHONE 3G and NOT 2G.

Midd June 20, 2009 at 11:58 am

Each time I try to jailbreak my 3G, Pwnage tool quits while building the ipsw file. I’m on a G5 with iTunes 8.2 and the 3.0 firmware.

aran June 20, 2009 at 12:13 pm

what about pc?

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 12:33 pm

@Midd I am afraid it doesn’t work on G5.. Works only on the new intel based macs

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 12:35 pm

@aran Yeah many are waiting for QUICKPWN – a jailbreaking tool which works on windows.. Hopefully the dev team will release it soon.. Will giv you a heads up when they do..

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 2:12 pm

@aran The jailbreak tool for windows is out :)

William June 20, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Thanks for the link, it worked great!! Unfortunately I can not get a carrier signal I think now or something. Basically I can not “Dial out”. I tried downloading a carrier update from someone and install it but still not able to call out. Any ideas?

Thanks again for the great tip!

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 3:50 pm

@William Are u on AT&T(US)?.. If you are not then you will have to wait for the ultrasn0w (unlock tool for iphone 3.0) to release.. Only then you will have a carrier signal.. Please don’t use anyother carrier updates till then.. Well jst to be safe..cheers!

Seagezzyt June 20, 2009 at 6:01 pm

I keep getting error (1600) or something. It basically says it failed, when ever I get to step 19. I have jailbroken plenty of times before but I have yet done it successfully with 3.0. Any help???

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 6:10 pm

@Seagezzyt Hi reckon its best if you use redsn0w to jailbreak if you are facing problem with the pwnage tool. The entire jailbreak process is more smooth sailing with redsn0w.

Here’s the link to the tutorial

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 6:11 pm

@seagezzyt and yeah it works for the mac too.. Download redsn0w for mac.. http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

Ara June 20, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Hi guys,

I have IPhone 3G, unlocked by myself and i’m on T-Mobile. Do I need to wait for ultraSnow to upgrade my Iphone 3G to 3.0

Matt Ward June 20, 2009 at 7:46 pm

@ara Read http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ a few times.

Do you have AT&T?
Yes -> you are ok to jailbreak
No -> wait for ultraSn0w so that you do not lose your service

steve June 21, 2009 at 10:17 am

worked like a charm – thanks a ton!

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 11:38 am

@steve cheers!

fieraku03 June 21, 2009 at 1:51 pm

hey guys step 19 is not happening for me my iphone is completely shut and in restore mode i cant even turn it on and it needs to be restored and when i click alt/Restore and select the build ispw it starts extracting and then it tells me there’s an error!!!! More specifically it says ” The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1600). gives me two options more info or OK…. so now im downloading standard 3.0 so at least i can restore it to regular and actually be able to use it…..CAN someone help please because apparently i cant restore with the custom ispw….Thank you

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 9:20 pm

@fierku03 Please use redsn0w instead of pwnage to jailbreak your iPhone.Ppl are facing very few problems with it. It works both for windows and MAC..

Here’s the link to the tutorial

always_seed June 21, 2009 at 9:50 pm

thanks great,, now how do i install mobileinstallation patch , so i can install custom apps? as the current version wont work with 3.0 fw

thanks

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 10:13 pm

@always_seed

You can download custom/cracked apps i.e ipa’s by using a new application called AppSync 3.0 from hackulo repository. AppSync patches your MobileInstallation file!

Here’s is a tutorial for it:

David Jay June 21, 2009 at 10:44 pm

David Jay June 21, 2009 at 10:46 pm

yrdgn June 21, 2009 at 10:53 pm

hey can u give me the link to the program and the correct ISPW pklease

yrdgn June 21, 2009 at 10:53 pm

i have a mac

David Jay June 21, 2009 at 11:12 pm

alright, so, redsn0w is doing the same thing, it keeps quitting unexpectedly….back to my first question, why???!

Rohit June 22, 2009 at 12:02 am

@David Jay Redsn0w keeps quitting if you are using the wrong ipsw file. There are different ipsw files for 2G and 3G phones.

Please visit http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

Once you are there

If you are running a iPhone “2G”

Please use this ipsw file in step 3:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

You will also need the following bootloader files in step 7

BL 3.9 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin
BL 4.6 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin

————————————————————————-

If you are using iPhone “3G”

Please use this ipsw file in step 3:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6578.20090617.VfgtU/iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

Skip step 7

Rohit June 22, 2009 at 12:04 am

Remember the step 3 and 7 that I have mentioned in the above comment applies to only redsn0w..

Pls visit http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

Rohit June 22, 2009 at 12:06 am

@yrdgn Please read the previous two comments and use redsn0w to jailbreak. redsn0w works even on the MAC

Visit http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

and you will find all the required links.

David Jay June 22, 2009 at 12:37 am

@Rohit, thanks for the help. I downloaded the firmware from the link but it still keeps crashing. idk what’s up with it, i just load the firmware then it gets up to the “patching kernal” then Bam…gone.

William June 22, 2009 at 1:20 am

No, I am on ATT. I can jailbreak and I do not get a signal. Then if I do a normal restore through Itunes I get my signal back??? very odd occurrence. I have now tried to do it on a different Mac as well and no luck. What could be going on here? The jailbreak works, the apps work everything is as groovy as it should be but I can not get a signal and make a phone call.

Rohit June 22, 2009 at 7:40 am

@William That’s strange if you are on AT&T, then you should get a signal after jailbreaking your iPhone. Can you please try the redsn0w method to jailbreak (If you haven’t tried it already that is). The success rate is very high with it..

Here’s the tutorial to jailbreak using redsn0w on both mac and windows.

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-30-using-redsnow-for-windows/

Rohit June 22, 2009 at 7:43 am

@William Oh brilliant you have resolved the issue:).. cheers!.

L337Fish June 23, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Need Help! Everytime I enter DFU mode, I get an error saying itunes can’t recognize my phone so I can’t custom restore. What should I do?

Dominic June 28, 2009 at 5:15 am

so let me get this straight…

if i jailbreak my iphone and i have AT&T, i’m going to lose my carrier signal and not be able to make/recieve calls?

flaco August 10, 2009 at 1:14 pm
