How to unlock iPhone (5.11.07 baseband) using Blacksn0w for Windows/Mac

by Rohit on November 3, 2009

Wohooo! BlackSn0w is out and it’s ready to give an end to the ‘Oh I am stuck on 5.11.07 baseband’ misery. Yes folks, the iPhone is finally unlockable again!

Here’s the tutorial on how to unlock your iPhone using BlackSnow

NOTE: The Blackra1n jailbreak and Blacksn0w unlock tutorial below is for Windows users.

If you are a Mac user: Click here

If you already have blackra1n app installed on your iPhone (and haven’t deleted it yet), then jump directly to step 11.

Requirements:

  • iPhone OS 3.1.2.
  • Windows Operating System.
  • Here are the steps to jailbreak your iPhone 3.1.2 using Blackra1n and unlock your iPhone using Blacksn0w

    1) Click on the url http://www.blackra1n.com. You will see the following image . Click on the shiny windows logo just above the donate button.

    2) On the following screen, click on save file

    3) Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and double click on Blackra1n.exe

    4) Make sure your iPhone or iPod is connected to the computer then click on make it ra1n button.

    5) Your device will now enter recovery mode. (If itunes opens telling you you need to restore because your device is in recovery mode, just click ok, then close down itunes)

    6) Click OK when you get the following screen

    7) Then your iPhone will display GeoHot’s picture and restart automatically and a blackra1n icon will appear on your iPhone. Please make sure you are connected to the net and then click on the application.

8 )Select the installer application (Choose Cydia or Rock) that you prefer and press the install button at the top right corner of your screen.

9)BlackRa1n will automatically download and install the package you selected.

    10) Congrats you just jailbroke your iPhone using Blackra1n. Kudos to GeoHot!

    11) To UNLOCK your iPhone tap on Sn0w button inside Blackra1n app and let Blacksn0w automatically unlock your iPhone.

NOTE: If you see ra1n button instead of Sn0w , then first tap on ra1n to upgrade your Blackra1n app. After upgrading, run blackra1n app again. You will see sn0w. Install it.

    12) Hurray! You just unlocked your iPhone :)

If for some reason you are still confused then perhaps this video from MtnXfreeride will give you an idea.

Hy a tip: it’s better to select both cydia and sn0w in the 8th step. It was quick and just worked. Thanks.

Jason November 3, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Didn’t work the first time for me. I later realized that the process requires that the iPhone BE CONNECTED TO THE NET either with WI-FI or 3G.

I am connected to net on PC via LAN but no wi-fi and there is no 3G coverage in my area. (So I have no NET on my iPhone).

I had to go to my friends house and use his wi-fi. It took jst about 2 mins to jailbreak and unlock. Wish Blackra1n worked without wifi. Would have spared me the trip.

Wayne November 3, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Blacksn0w worked but I installed something from cydia and WI-Fi stopped working on my iPhone. Help

Rohit November 3, 2009 at 7:23 pm

Go to settings > general > reset and tap on reset all settings. Ur wi-fi should start working.

sam1588 November 3, 2009 at 7:35 pm

heyyy can i do this while im on firmware 3.0.1 or should i upgrade it to 3.1.2 n then do it…the only reason im hesitating is cause a few days ago…people said not to upgrade it to 3.1.2 cause there may never be a unlock for that. n also THANKS SOOOOOOOO MUCH FOR BLACKRA1N!!!!

Eddie November 3, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Hey, I made the jailbreak with blackrain and it worked real good, but after the jailbreak the blackrain icon didn´t show on my iPhone! So I couldn´t unlock it. What can I do?
Thanks

sam1588 November 3, 2009 at 7:42 pm

O n also does it matter how the iphone was jailbroken..cause i downgraded it to 3.0.1 n then used the “dev-teams” way to jailbreak it…so can i still do this procedure or should i upgrade my firmware..n then do it

Rohit November 3, 2009 at 7:55 pm

@Sam1588 Yeah you will have to upgrade to 3.1.2 firmware and don’t worry the reason why people always recommended not to upgrade was coz there was no unlock available for 5.11.07 firmware.

But with Blacksn0w the unlock is possible on the latest baseband:) No it doesn’t matter which jailbreak you used before.

Carl November 3, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Hy Eddie evn I had the same problem the blackra1n icon wasn’t showing up. I kept tryin but it never worked. I later realised that my previous Blackra1n was still lying on my iPhone.

so I restored my iPhone and set it up as NEW PHONE and then ran Blackra1n again and it worked :)

ims November 3, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Can you please let me know how to remove older version of Blackra1n which is lying on my iPhone.

Can I upgrade or restore 3.1.2 firmware from itunes or there is any other method of upgrading.
Thanks

Carl November 3, 2009 at 10:23 pm

IMS just RESTORE(NOT UPDATE) your iPhone from iTunes to upgrade to 3.1.2 firmware. After doing this set your iPhone as NEW Phone instead of setting it from backup.

This way all your previous Blackra1n installation will be wiped out and you can use install the latest Blackra1n and unlock your iPhone using Blacksn0w.

Tom November 3, 2009 at 10:50 pm

@rohit: So i have to make sure there’s no sim in my iphone and my iphone is connected to wifi before i run blacksn0w?

ims November 3, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Thanks Carl, BTW should I take the backup for my contacts and Apps etc before I restore as New phone? also how do I save the themes which I have downloaded.
Thanks once again

Rohit November 3, 2009 at 11:52 pm

@Tom worked for me without removing the sim :)

GeoHotrockz November 3, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Hy IMS you can use Aptbackup to backup cydia applications.

It doesn’t actually create a backup of the native iPhone apps, instead it creates a list of all the Cydia-installed iPhone apps on your iPhone and takes a backup of this list via iTunes.

It uses this list of all the Cydia-installed iPhone applications that was backed up to re-install all the applications automatically.

U can Install Aptbackup via cydia.

ericardogr November 4, 2009 at 6:34 am

hey, I’ve gone from 1.1.2 to 3,1 each time theres a newer firmware, but since the iphones have newr genereation, my question is: Does updating to 3.1.2 via itunes and the blackrain work on iphones 2G?
best regards :-)

Bret November 4, 2009 at 6:40 am

Ericardogr You can directly update to 3.1.2 via iTunes and YES blackra1n and blacksn0w will work

Carl November 4, 2009 at 6:45 am

@Stugok If you have done things right your Wifi should work.
After restoring your iPhone via iTunes to 3.1.2 did you set up your iPhone as NEW PHONE? you are NOT suppose to set it up from backup.

Restore your iPhone to 3.1.2 again.. set it up as new Phone and run the Blackra1n and Blacksn0w again and if you do things right it should work.

Pikey November 4, 2009 at 7:22 am

@sam1588 You can do it with ANY sim!!
GeoHot rules! \m/

@martin
while stuck on the apple logo try running blackra1n again. You should be sorted :)

martin November 4, 2009 at 9:04 am

@capt crunch
mate thanks for helping but i did what you said and it’s not doing anything… Plus i cant get to start in safe mode as well which means i cant get itunes to recognize anything so i cant restore….
Do you think it screwed up because i was on 3.1?

Penn November 4, 2009 at 9:20 am

Hy Martin you should have restored to 3.1.2 and then run Blackra1n. Nways if your iPhone is still stuck on apple logo see if this post helps.. http://bit.ly/3YlRNo

xu November 4, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I get my IPhone 3GS in October/09 from local Apple store in US using my existing AT&T account. It has 5.11.07 baseband and 3.1.2 OS. blackra1 RC3 cannot jailbreak it. After I run blackra1 RC3, it will hang on the “entering recovery” phase forever and never move to the “running” stage. In the middle of “entering recovery” phase, itunes will pop up and tell you to restore, I close the itune and wait on the “entering recovery” screen, but it never moved to “running” screen. After half hours waiting, I use iTune restored the IPhone. I notice there are some postings mentioned that blackra1 may not work for IPhone 3GS bought after Oct 09 and it is only a tethered jailbreak for the very latest IPhone. So anyone knows what exact this tethered jailbreak means and how I do this “tethered jailbreak” for my IPhone bought after Oct 09. Thank for you help.

sam1588 November 4, 2009 at 4:03 pm

OMG thank u sooooooooooo much guys!!! it worked :)

channa November 4, 2009 at 6:38 pm

Rohit November 5, 2009 at 1:58 am

@habib Thanks for the feedback. Will change the site design to make font bigger in 2 days. Meanwhile use ‘command and +’ on mac or ‘ctrl and +’ on Windows to increase the font size while using firefox.

Carl November 5, 2009 at 1:58 am

@sam1588 cheers

Srikanth November 5, 2009 at 2:03 am
Rohit November 5, 2009 at 2:06 am

@Shashank Yes it will definitely work on Airtel :)

Rohit November 5, 2009 at 2:11 am

@Tobbsi In most cases Wi-fi works after resetting network

See if this thread helps

http://modmyi.com/forums/t-mobile/690722-easy-fix-blacksn0w-wifi-problems.html

And yes after blacra1n you can use original carrier sim to install blacksn0w via 3G.

Carl November 5, 2009 at 2:12 am

@Tina @Channa We are happy that the solution worked for you

mizzik November 5, 2009 at 2:45 am

IS it possible to use data connection on T-Mobile after the unlock is done? My phone keeps saying no data connection. WI-FI and text and phone works, just no data connection. I have a data plan with T-Mobile as well.

Shay November 5, 2009 at 4:27 am

does anyone have sprint as there carrier?

shashank November 5, 2009 at 12:33 pm

thanks rohit
i read this while going through On the iPhone comments:

“ran blackra1n and blacksn0w to jailbreak and unlock, this all took about 30 seconds. But WiFi and YouTube basically wouldn’t work. So I restored using a custom ipsw made using pwnage tool 3.1.4, and installed blacksn0w using Cydia, and all is good”

does this mean that by doing this we will be free of the tethered jailbreak that blackra1n gives and also have unlock for the 5.11 baseband?

DOES THIS WORK????
love to know ur comments on this

shashank November 5, 2009 at 12:43 pm

in relation to the above comment

can we use this to jailbreak a new out of the box activate 3GS on 3.1.2
http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-iphone-3gs-firmware-3-1-2-using-pwnagetool-for-mac/

then use this to unlock it i.e. baseband 5.11
http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-unlock-using-blacksn0w-from-cydia-if-iphone-is-already-pwned/

this way we will have a jailbroken + unlocked 3GS without the tethered jailbreak that blackra1n gives
also no problems of wifi and youtube that r faced by many
CAN WE DO IT WILL/DOES IT WORK?????

befree November 5, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Just did this and enabled tethering, works great and was simple to do, but now no Visual Voicemail, got a fix?

STUGOK November 5, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Hi Rohit,

If you are there please I need some help now. I finally got my WIFI connect to the internet. But when I clicked on Blackra1n it brought up three different package for me to choose, I choose sn0w and clicked install but I am stocked on “Post install log for sn0w” for about 30 minutes now, what do I do next?
