How to unlock iPhone 3G 3.0 using ultrasn0w

by Rohit on June 23, 2009

I was at the airport all geared up for my exciting holiday to Italy but felt like a total mess for not carrying a different phone (My iPhone is locked to o2 UK) . I was hoping against all hopes that the dev team would release the unlock today and hallelujah it’s here. Thanks @Thien for tipping me off.

The tutorial cannot be more simpler than what’s put up on the dev teams blog. Since I am on the move I will stick it in here.

  • Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
  • Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy) — If you haven’t done this already use  the tutorial on how to jailbreak  using redsn0w – Click here
  • Run Cydia or Icy
  • Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy.  That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
  • Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
  • Reboot your iPhone 3G
  • T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
  • Enjoy

Hi guys! I was a noob when it came to JB/UL tricks. I followed the instructions above with one issue:
1)You “must” put a “/” in “repo666.ultrasn0w.com/” or it will not take. Wierd.
2) At various stages I got error messages: “Can not find repository” (when initially downloading the package). I believe that the above / is the solution combined with below.
3) I also got an error in installing the Ultrasn0w package “host not found”. I fooled around with two things.
a)Is 3G turned off? I didn’t think it mattered because I hadn’t upgraded my T-Mobile service yet. Duh! it does.
b)I took the phone to work and logged on to their Wifi. My home and work are both ATT&T Yahoo. (Doesn’t seem to matter). Then, I attempted to install again. Success!! Wierd! Is it the fact that I disconnected it from my PC while installing Ultrasn0w?
c)Tonight, I restored all back to 3.0 in Itunes, and was able to finish the whole process back at home tonight! What the?

So, lastly, for the other noobs. It’s easy. Don’t forget the above pitfalls. But other than that, download redsn0w, and JB, then download Ultrasn0w through the “repo….” address. Keep 3G off and disconnect from PC while installing Ultrasn0w through Cydia. Should work!

Oh…all the numbered comments above pertain to Unlocking. Jailbreaking is easy with redsn0w. I normally use Cydia, but had gone this was first. Your choice. Just get the proper 3.0 restore software above. And just make sure to only check “Install Cydia” when installing to avoid “icy” errors….or so I’ve heard.
