Thank you for this information! I just received my iPhone and I could not get my email set up. I knew from reading the google blogs that I wasn't alone. I went to the service provider, and they were not much help either. And then you came along! Within 2 minutes my mail was up and running, and synced! You deserve the highest praise for keeping me from poking my eyes out! Thank you....

@Asel Hi there!

Apparently many folks are facing the verification failed error and the same problem that you have.

Here's what a Google employee has to say about this:

"Am definitely seeing the slowness. Google is working on the demand issue (forecasting exactly how much to provide out of the gates with as many users as Google has is a very tough problem, indeed, not to mention Exchange server [at least from Microsoft] rarely handles more than 500,000 Exchange accounts for most organizations. One can only imagine how many total accounts Google is trying to use it with, unless they built something proprietary).

Either way, Gmail is free, their syncing support is free and so I'll just wait patiently until they resolve it. Hard to complain to a company that has given me such great services for absolutely zero cost."

So im using the googlemail.com account, and it still says it cannot verify the certificate for it. I Accept it and it just says verification failed and when I open the created account, it says unable to contact the server.. Are you sure the server for the googlemail.com accounts is the same as for gmail.com accounts? What do I do now? =(

@Christopher In your case, you can just delete the previous fetch gmail account. Once you are done with that make sure you activate PUSH in the new Microsoft exchange based gmail account that you setup using the above tutorial. To do this

1)Tap on SETTINGS.
2)Choose MAIL, CONTACTS and CALENDER.
3)Tap on FETCH NEW DATA option.
4)In the following screen, if PUSH is OFF, tap on it to switch it ON

NOTE: The iPhone only supports one Exchange account, so if you happen to already use one for something like work, you can’t also use it for your personal Google account.
