Remember when the Google Phone released, how we all felt envious about the fact that Android users were getting to use Gmail push. iPhone users around the world were desperate to have the feature, so that they could use it as a free alternative to the paid ‘Mobile Me’ service. Many placed repeated requests on the Google mobile forum and finally gave up when there was no positive response. However, all the prayers have been answered on Google’s official blog today!
Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Sync works with your phone’s native email application so there’s no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.
Here’s a tutorial on how to setup Push Gmail on your iPhone.
1) Make sure you are on iPhone firmware 3.0 or above.
2) Backup your contacts and calenders to your computer using iTunes.
3) Go to Settings and tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

4) Tap Add Account and in the following screen, select Microsoft exchange.

5) Enter the necessary information in the respective fields i.e.
- Email field: Enter your full email id. (If you get “Unable to verify certificate” warning, ignore it)
- Domain Name field: Leave blank.
- Username: Enter your full email id.
- Password: Enter your password.

6) Choose next in the top-right corner of the screen and select Accept if the Unable to Verify Certificate dialog appears.
7) In the next step, enter m.google.com in the Server field.

8 ) Again tap on next in the top-right corner of the screen and choose the Google services you want to sync.
9) Choose Keep on my iPhone option so that you don’t delete the existing contacts and calenders on your iPhone.

Note: If you want to sync only My contacts group, you will have to select ‘delete existing contacts’ option when prompted. If you choose the ‘keep the existing contacts’ option, All contacts group will be synced.
10) Congrats you have setup Google sync. If push is enabled on your iPhone, the syncing process will begin automatically. If not open mail, calender and contact apps and wait for sometime for Google sync to start.

so what i can then delete the fetch gmail account after it has sync’d?
@Christopher In your case, you can just delete the previous fetch gmail account. Once you are done with that make sure you activate PUSH in the new Microsoft exchange based gmail account that you setup using the above tutorial. To do this
1)Tap on SETTINGS.
2)Choose MAIL, CONTACTS and CALENDER.
3)Tap on FETCH NEW DATA option.
4)In the following screen, if PUSH is OFF, tap on it to switch it ON
NOTE: The iPhone only supports one Exchange account, so if you happen to already use one for something like work, you can’t also use it for your personal Google account.
So im using the googlemail.com account, and it still says it cannot verify the certificate for it. I Accept it and it just says verification failed and when I open the created account, it says unable to contact the server.. Are you sure the server for the googlemail.com accounts is the same as for gmail.com accounts? What do I do now? =(
@Asel Hi there!
Apparently many folks are facing the verification failed error and the same problem that you have.
Here’s what a Google employee has to say about this:
“Am definitely seeing the slowness. Google is working on the demand issue (forecasting exactly how much to provide out of the gates with as many users as Google has is a very tough problem, indeed, not to mention Exchange server [at least from Microsoft] rarely handles more than 500,000 Exchange accounts for most organizations. One can only imagine how many total accounts Google is trying to use it with, unless they built something proprietary).
Either way, Gmail is free, their syncing support is free and so I’ll just wait patiently until they resolve it. Hard to complain to a company that has given me such great services for absolutely zero cost.”

Thank you for this information! I just received my iPhone and I could not get my email set up. I knew from reading the google blogs that I wasn’t alone. I went to the service provider, and they were not much help either. And then you came along! Within 2 minutes my mail was up and running, and synced! You deserve the highest praise for keeping me from poking my eyes out! Thank you….
@Betty Cheers!
