How to remain on 3G network without ever falling on EDGE, GPRS on iPhone

by Rohit on October 1, 2009

Are you tired of your iPhone constantly switching to EDGE, GPRS despite 3G being available in the area? Then this tutorial will make sure that you always remain on 3G network and enjoy the good transfer rates.

Warning: Be 100% sure that your area has 3G coverage. If not you won’t be able to make calls as your iPhone will try using 3G and not resort to 2G network at all. I recommend folks who aren’t used to iPhone file systems and are risk-aversive to avoid trying this out.

Here’s a tutorial on how to always remain on 3G network on your iPhone.

1) Access the iPhone file system via SSH.

2) Browse to directory var / preferences

3) Search the file CSID and save it on your computer.

4) Open the saved CSID file with textedit or notepad.

  • Look for the string: GsmRegistrationModel: fRatSelection = 0 × 1
  • Replace it with this: GsmRegistrationModel: fRatSelection = 0 × 2

(The values imply: 0×0 :Edge Only, 0×1: Edge+3G, 0×2: 3G Only)

5) After making the above change to the string, save the file and reupload it via SSH to the same location from where you downloaded it.

6) Reboot your iPhone.

7) Congrats you can now be 24/7 on the high speed 3G and never fall back on EDGE.

Important: If you face any problems or just want to go back to previous settings.; follow the above steps again. But this time around in the 4th step replace the string value from 0 × 2 to 0 × 1.
