How to jailbreak your iPhone firmware 3.1.2 using Blackra1n for Windows

by Rohit on October 11, 2009

NOTE: The Blackra1n jailbreak tutorial below is for Windows users. If you are a Mac user: Click here

Requirements:

  • iPhone OS 3.1.2.
  • Windows Operating System.
  • iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS running on Firmware 3.1.2 and on an official carrier.
  • iPod 1G, 2G or 3G running on Firmware 3.1.2 and on an official carrier.
  • Here are the steps to jailbreak your iPhone 3.1.2 using Blackra1n

Reminder: If your iPhone is unlocked via ultrasn0w then please stay away from Blackra1n. Blackra1n is for those users who aren’t worried about losing their unlock ability(moving to baseband 05.11.07). So, if you want to preserve your baseband do not use this tool.

    1) Click on the url http://www.blackra1n.com. You will see the following image . Click on the shiny windows logo just above the donate button.

    2) On the following screen, click on save file

    3) Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and double click on Blackra1n.exe

    4) Make sure your iPhone or iPod is connected to the computer then click on make it ra1n button.

    5) Your device will now enter recovery mode. (If itunes opens telling you you need to restore because your device is in recovery mode, just click ok, then close down itunes)

    6) Click OK when you get the following screen

    7) Then your iPhone will display GeoHot’s picture and restart automatically and a blackra1n icon will appear on your iPhone. Please make sure you are connected to the net and then click on the application.

8 )Select the installer application (Choose Cydia) that you prefer and press the install button at the top right corner of your screen.

9)BlackRa1n will automatically download and install the package you selected.

    10) Congrats you just jailbroke your iPhone using Blackra1n. Kudos to GeoHot!

Note: After you are done installing cydia. If you want to remove the blackra1n icon on your iPhone, just tap on the icon and you will find an uninstall blackra1n option at the bottom.

FINALLY!!!!

YES!! – I got it to work. If your running MCAFEE Antivirus – I had to uninstall it – not just diable it & reboot. I also switched USB cables.

Keep at it guys… It took me like 40+ tries and a lot of trouble shooting and trial and error.

sean October 14, 2009 at 12:03 am

Wow, this was the easiest jailbreak, thanks!

Julie October 14, 2009 at 6:53 am

@Rich Thanks for your help! As you said I uninstalled my antivirus and tried. It worked :)

poser October 14, 2009 at 10:29 am

anyone know if this will work on 3rd gen ipod touch with the 3.1.1?

Rohit October 14, 2009 at 1:12 pm

@Liang Zhou and others whose iPhone’s are stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device and also iTunes screen. Read carefully:

# Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
# Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
# Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
# If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
# You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
# If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
IMPORTANT: If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
# Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people

@Poser

iPod Touch 3rd generation 3.1.2(not 3.1.1) can be jailbroken using blackra1n. It is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again.

If you have any issues you can follow the instructions I have given to Liang Zhou in the previous(above) comment.

zReapeR October 14, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I have a big problem: I am using iPod Touch 3G™ 8GB, and when I run blackra1n, it goes through to “Success, wait for reboot”, but when I look @ my iPod then, theres a black screen (Recovery mode??) and nothing happens, it doesn’t reboot nothing. Also tried to reboot manually via Standby + Home buttons, but then it starts normally and there’s no blackra1n program in my springboard…

zReapeR October 14, 2009 at 11:30 pm

I start the blackra1n, all works till the msgbox, then it stays for like half an hour in recovery mode, and then just starts up, without any pic of geohot or anything else, and the blackra1n program is also not there… Do I need to have Wi-Fi-Connection even for the jailbreak?

SweetPea October 15, 2009 at 1:15 am

Hi, I just want to make things clear. I have a Iphone 3GS that I unlocked 3.0.1 using purplera1n. My carrier is T-Mobile now. Is this the new jailbreak and unlock for 3.0.1? Can I use Blackra1n and do the same thing except for 3.1? I would have to install 3.1 from my Itunes then do the steps correct? Please correct me If I’m wrong, I’m a little bit confused why it said if you are currently unlocked don’t use blackrain. If I stick a At&T sim inside will it work then? Then stick my T-Mobile back in right? THANKS!

Hi zReapeR and iPOD TOUCH 3G USERS

Did you even read the previous comments by Rohit?

Pod Touch 3rd generation 3.1.2(not 3.1.1) can be jailbroken using blackra1n. It is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again.

Since it’s a tethered jailbreak, there are many issues involved. Many users iPod Touch’s are stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device and also iTunes screen

To resolve the issue try these

# Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
# Download the blackra1n tool to your desktop.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR IPOD TOUCH 3rd GEN USERS:
GeoHotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB.

Rohit October 15, 2009 at 5:57 am

@SweetPea Do not jailbreak your iPhone using Blackra1n if you want to run it on T-Mobile. As I have already mentioned in the post Blacra1n causes your iPhone to lose it’s unlock ability. Purplera1n could be unlocked without any problems. I HOPE YOU HAVENT ALREADY UPDATED TO 3.1.2 FIRMWARE DIRECTLY VIA iTUNES. If yes, then you have unknowingly updated to 05.11.07 baseband(modem) firmware which results in iPhone losing it’s unlock ability(No more T-MOBILE or any other sim).

If you are still on 3.0.1 then you are safe and can use pwnagetool 3.1.4 to jailbreak your iPhone to 3.1.2 firmware and also retain your unlock(so that u can use t-mobile). You need to be a MAC user. If you are, then follow the tutorial below on how to jailbreak your iPhone using Pwnage 3.1.4

zReapeR October 15, 2009 at 11:56 am

as I wrote I DID what Rohit wrote, still doesn’t work.

zReapeR October 15, 2009 at 12:02 pm

I did what Rohit wrote, but it doesn’t work, I don’t know what I do wrong…? Once I made it work so I saw the pic of geohot and it worked but then I tried again and never worked again… Don’t even know what I did there, I think I had the blackra1n “Waiting for reboot” and left it open, just started another application of blackra1n so I had 2 blackra1ns and then it worked or such things…. it just doesn’t reboot it only reboots after like 20-30 minutes and still then there’s no icon of geohot and the application not on my iPod…

Rohit October 15, 2009 at 12:47 pm

@zReapeR Go to Settings > General > About on your iPod Touch and check the model. You probably have MC model iPod Touch.

GeoHot has made it official that for MC model Blackra1n jailbreak tool doesn’t work :( You need to be on the MB model.

SweetPea October 15, 2009 at 1:41 pm

What if I use a AT&T Sim card to unlock it using blackrain? Will that work? Then when it jailbreaks and unlocks use my T-moble agian?

Rohit October 15, 2009 at 2:40 pm

@SweetPea You can unlock it using Blackra1n and use AT&T but the moment you put T-mobile sim, you will get no network signal.

I know you are talking from your previous Purplera1n jailbreak experience. But things are different this time around.

If you really want to jailbreak and then unlock your iPhone to use T-Mobile I again suggest you to use PwnageTool.

poser October 15, 2009 at 7:33 pm

thanx rohit! i appreciated the help…everything working for me now on my 3g 32gig ipod touch…

Hunnie October 16, 2009 at 3:24 am

Hi guys, I have a question. I have a 3g on 3.1 firmware and a baseband of 5.11.07. By using Pwnage Tool 3.14 on Mac OS I will be able to jailbreak and unlock it? And be able to use T-moble service? Thank you guys!!

Rohit October 17, 2009 at 3:38 pm

@poser cheers!

Rohit October 17, 2009 at 3:40 pm

@Hunnie I am sorry but you will be able to just jailbreak but not unlock as you are on 05.11.07 firmware. You won’t be able to use T-Mobile sim or any other unofficial carrier. You will have to stick to AT&T!

heyho October 19, 2009 at 5:17 pm

tried all of the above several times — did not work (on iPhone screen w/ usb and itunes for minutes, had to reboot iphone). THEN took out SIM card — worked! I am using a 3G with 3.1.2.(stupid me upgrading when itunes suggested to do so…). as carrier i’m using a (German) e-plus prepaid (medion mobile, yep: aldi talk!). so: take SIM-Card out!

Rohit October 19, 2009 at 6:41 pm

@heyho Thanks for the tip mate.

joe October 20, 2009 at 2:01 am

hey guys i have been trying all the steps several times and it still does not work…it always stays on the itunes cable. can someone help???

I’ve tried all of the above suggestions and still get the usb error for doing the jailbreak. Anyone else or do I just need to keep doing it until it works… I’ve tried about 5 times now.

mkstar October 23, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Hy Shero which device do u have? If it’s ipod touch 3rd gen then bad news many are hvin the prob. However, it worked for my frien using the above tutorial and not for me. Apparently, I am on the MC model. Evn the latest iPhone has the same problem. MC model sucks :(

Nelson October 25, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Sanjay October 26, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Hey Rohit – Need Immed help. Tried purplera!n on 3gs and now iphone won;t reboot. tried all the above tricks – when i run blacka!n now – get the message that ‘waiting for iphone’ when i try to reboot i see the apple logo for a few seconds and then it dies. Using Vodafone in India.
Log file has wtf ‘WARN: wtf who called this?’

Sanjay October 26, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Since now it is not showing up in the itunes – i can’t even restore it. I am happy if i am able to re-store and go back to 3.0

Rohit October 26, 2009 at 5:24 pm

@Sanjay If your iPhone is still stuck on Apple logo or in recovery mode then try this out

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-fix-the-problem-of-iphone-3gs-being-stuck-on-apple-logo-screen-or-in-recovery-mode/

I hope you haven’t moved to 05.11.07 modem(baseband) firmware in your bid to jailbreak using Purplera1n. If you end up on new baseband ur iPhone will lose it’s unlock ability.

On the other hand if Vodafone is ur official carrier and u plan to stick with it in the future then you have nothing to worry :)

Rohit October 26, 2009 at 5:27 pm

@Nelson Will definitely giv u an update :)

Sanjay October 27, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Hi Rohit – Thanks for the link! However by then I had restored to the 05.11.07 and now need the unlocakbility for it. I am following you on other thread to see when it gets released… ciao Sanjay

@Sanjay sure sanjay. I will keep u updated.

@Julie Am glad that it worked for you :)

@Nelson Cheers :)
