How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware using Redsnow for windows/mac

by Rohit on June 20, 2009

(GUYS ULTRASN0W the unlock tool for iPhone 3G 3.0 is out!!!!.. First jailbreak your iPhone using the following steps in this post and once you are done jailbreaking head to the tutorial on how to unlock your iPhone 3G 3.0 using ultrasn0w – Click here for unlock tutorial )

Wohooo Jailbreak tool for windows is finally out!!!Its redsn0w. Please Note: This works even on the MAC.

1) Restore your iPhone OS to 3.0 firmware by using itunes 8.2. Here is the link to 3.0 firmware ipsw file. Once you are done downloading it, hold shift and click on restore from your iTunes (mac users: alt/option key + click on restore) and navigate to the ipsw file you just downloaded in order to restore your iPhone to 3.0 firmware. (Note: Use firefox/internet explorer and not safari to download the ipsw file, if not it will be downloaded as a ZIP file instead of IPSW)

2) Download Redsn0w (jailbreaking tool for windows) from any of the windows links on http://blog.iphone-dev.org/. I used

http://72.14.179.250/Downloads/redsn0w-win_0.7.1.zip.

Mac users download Redsnow from here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/247149113/redsn0w-mac_0.7.2.zip

3) Once you are done downloading, launch it and you will get the following screen. Now browse to the Original iPhone firmware OS 3.0 .ipsw file. If you haven’t already got it, you can download it from here. (Note: iPhone 2G users please check below for the ipsw link )

4) Redsn0w then checks if the .ipsw is valid. Click next.

5) Now redsn0w will automatically patch the original file. Click next when done.

6) i) On the following screen Check on Install Cydia option to jailbreak .

ii)Check on “Unlock” ONLY IF you are an iPhone 2G user to unlock.

(Reminder : iPhone 3g users please check on ONLY “install cydia” option)

7) On the following screen iPhone 2g users can provide the path to bl39.bin and bl46.bin files. iPhone 3g users press next and skip this step. (NOTE: iPhone 2G users please find the bl39.bin and bl46.bin files below)

8) On the following screen make sure that your iPhone is PLUGGED IN to the computer AND switched OFF and click “Next”.

9) Now the part where you have to pay rapt attention: On the next screen you will be presented with a set of instructions. Follow them carefully:

i) Hold “Power” button for 2 seconds

ii)Then while holding the Power button, you will now have to hold Home button too for 10 seconds.

iii)Then release Power button but keep holding Home button for about 30 seconds i.e till the installation begins.

10) The Jailbreak process will now begin. Once it’s done, the iPhone will reboot on its own and you will find cydia on it.

11) Congrats you have just jailbroken your dear iPhone :)

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR iPhone 2G USERS:

Please use this ipsw file in step 3:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

You will also need the following bootloader files in step 7

BL 3.9 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin
BL 4.6 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS : I tried jailbreak on WINDOWS 7 but redsn0w kept crashing. So I ran it in compatibility mode for windows xp and then ran it as an administrator. It worked!. Here’s how you do it

i) Right Click on Redsnow.exe

ii) Click on Properties

iii )Switch to Compatibility tab on the top.

iv) Check ” Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP ”

v) Start the application by right clicking on redsn0w. exe file and click on run as administrator

you dont have to install firefox, just type the .ipsw tag after the filename.

Richie, I had the same issue with missing icons on my screen after jailbreaking and unlocking. I added a wallpaper using winterboard or something like that and after it installed, i had only one icon on my phone. The rest is black. Did you figure this out? Any one have any ideas?

Hi

My unlocked iPhone 3G OS3 JB/upgrade kinda went successfully. What went missing was the iPod icon – i.e. I am not able to play my music/video/audio books etc.

Have anyone else encounter the same? and if there was a fix?

Very much appreciate your kind feedback/assistance.

Hello,

I recently (today) upgraded my 2g to 3.0. Everthing updated correctly except that now i can’t connect to the internet except via WI-FI. How do i fix this problem. When i try to connect it says “could not activate cellular data network: yiou are not subscribed to a cellular data service”. I’m on t-mobile and have an unlimited data plan. Before i undated my firmware I could connect to the internet.

Thanks for you assistance.

kobi July 30, 2009 at 2:47 pm

guys help T_T i think im stuck. i got my itouch into DFU mode and it started to jailbreak but its stuck on waiting for reboot. help me please

cyber July 30, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Kobi, et al. – I followed these instructions to a t, but when redsn0w tried to reboot my iphone it just froze up and was stuck in the waiting for reboot stage. If this is doing this for you just unplug the iphone from your computer and then plug it in again while that redsn0w waiting for reboot screen is open. it should start to reboot then. Worked for me!

Mark August 4, 2009 at 2:59 am

Thanks cyber. Worked for me too. Was searching a while for this solution.

Bonnie 29, I’m having the same Exchange impact as you. I’m making people crazy by sending them the same meetin invite over and over again. Is anyone else experiencing this? I had to restore my device, as I use Exchange email 24/7.

I’ve got RedSn0w downloaded as well as my iPhone’s latest firmware which is 3.0.1, 7A400. When I go to browse for the firmware and RedSn0w tries to verify it fails stating “Unable to recognize specified IPSW.” I’ve tried renaming the file with .zip, then .ipsw… still nothing. Please help

gaurav August 17, 2009 at 7:57 am

Mor3n0* August 31, 2009 at 3:28 am

Hey guys,

I have the first generation iPhone[2G]…I have done the RedSnow process about 7,001 times. Although RedSnow says the process is done, my phone stays stuck on the screen with the hard drive for about 10 minutes before it restarts and shows the “Conect to iTunes” screen. What am i doing wrong? i’ve been on this all day…please help!

Rohit August 31, 2009 at 7:46 am

Hi Mor3no seems like you have the classic problem of “stuck on reboot screen”. When this happens just unplug your iPhone USB cable and then immediately replug it. Am sure your installation will then move on. Temme if this doesn’t resolve the issue.

Rohit August 31, 2009 at 8:02 am

@Gaurav Definitely YES

Rohit August 31, 2009 at 8:09 am

@khymburlie Download the IPSW using firefox. For some reason using IE and Safari it gets saved on the hard disk as zip file.

A user @Ichigo had the same problem and resolved the issue. Here’s what he said

“I figured out what the problem was since I have Imac and IPSW files are automatically opened with Itunes I couldn’t locate the files on my computer, so I downloaded it in Firefox because Safari sends the files automatically to Itunes. Now it worked. So for Mac Users please download Firefox first because it allows you to save the file on a other location instead of automatically opening them to open with Itunes choose save file. And the file will be saved on your desktop”

Rohit August 31, 2009 at 8:31 am

@Louis Just jailbreaking your iPhone isn’t enough to get it working on other carriers. You need to unlock it as well. For this you need to use ultrasn0w. Do let me know if you want the tutorial on how to use ultrasn0w.

Rohit August 31, 2009 at 8:56 am

@Malcum You need to change your APN settings to activate cellular data. You can do this by tapping on settings on your iPhone. Then select network and tap on cellular data network. A quick search on google for “t-mobile US apn settings for iPhone” will help you find the APN, username and password that you need to enter.

John September 2, 2009 at 3:52 am

Do you have iTunes connected when you run redsn0w?

Do you have a SIM card in when you run redsn0w?

So far, I am hanging at the “waiting on reboot” step

Rohit September 2, 2009 at 11:08 am

Hi John seems like you have the classic problem of “stuck on reboot screen”. When this happens just unplug your iPhone USB cable and then immediately replug it. Am sure your installation will then move on. Temme if this doesn’t resolve the issue.

12345 September 3, 2009 at 5:24 pm

ok well i did all of the above and red snow says done but the my I phone is stuck on the ‘downloading Jailbreak data’ screen and it would not move on. i have done this a number of times using vista and XP and i dont know what i am doing wrong???please help

Mike September 4, 2009 at 5:56 am

@12345
If your iPhone stuck is on “DOWNLOADING JAILBREAK DATA”)
YOU HAVE TO RUN REDSN0W as ADMINISTRATOR (right-click, Run as Administrator).

Be it Windows XP, Vista or 7, you need to run it as administrator

Rohit September 4, 2009 at 6:00 am

@12345 Yea as MIKE said above, you need to right click on Redsnow and run it as an Administrator. Then your iPhone will stop getting stuck at Downloading Jailbreak Data.

Dakota September 7, 2009 at 2:30 am

Ok, so have redsnow downloaded and can run it. but when i try to download the firmware for my ipsw file it will downliad but then i cant get it to go to the ipsw file. all it does is just downloads. I cant get it to extract or anything. Any suggestions?

Rohit September 8, 2009 at 2:36 pm

@dakota You dont have to extract the ipsw. Just download it and remember the location. Then in step 3 when redsn0w asks you for the file, you just need to browse to the location where you downloaded the IPSW and select it. Once this is done redsn0w will automatically verify if the IPSW is valid.

Lemme knw if you still run into probs..

Subcircuit September 10, 2009 at 6:33 am

Man, i have looking high and low for a solution, but there is non I tried to jailbreak my iphone using redsn0w 0.8 in conjunction with using IPSW iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore, the same tutorial thats been floating around the web ever since its been out. I have a Iphone 3gs 16g,What happends is in right when I let off power button the screen goes blank and it says it is jailbreaking but i dont see anything happen on the phone just on the computer, and it says the whole thing uploading ramdisk, uploading kernal, then adventually done, No pineapple no nothing just a blankscreen. I have tried restoring iphone completely from itunes and rebooting my computer nothing works. My phone just restores back to normal but i cant jail break it

Rohit September 10, 2009 at 10:46 am

@subcircuit Hi there! The best solution in your case is to follow P!xel’s(ipodtouchfans user) suggestion

This is what he had to say

“I finally got it to jailbreak!

Prior to this, I was running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP2 and redsn0w would say it’s ‘Done!’ but my iPhone would remain at a black screen.

After numerous attempts with Run as Administrator, Compatability mode, Lib-USB and what-not, I gave up and decided to switch to Windows XP to see if it works.

Miraculously, on my Pentium III Laptop with Windows XP, it works! (Don’t ask why it’s a Pentium III)

I draw a conclusion from my experiences that Vista seems to have known compatability issues with communication with the iPod via USB.

My suggestion to all Vista users is to install a clean copy of Windows XP on a separate partition. Windows XP users with such issues are also recommended to have a fresh reinstallation on a separate partition.

Install all drivers, service packs and iTunes only to ensure that there is no interference with other programs.

I wish you all luck! Thanks again to redsn0w and this wonderful community!

Another happy user with a successful jailbreak,
- P!xel
:)

SO SUBCIRCUIT TRY JAILBREAKING USING XP. Other possible solutions are:

1)If u r using redsn0w 0.8 you have an option to select icy as well. DON’T select it. Just install cydia. For some reason users in the past have had their jailbreak process end abruptly after choosing to install ICY along with CYDIA.

2) After the jailbreak if cydia doesn’t show up on your iPhone. Go to general then settings, Enable restrictions, then disable them. This should bring up cydia.

Subcircuit September 10, 2009 at 8:10 pm

well I just got done tring all of the above still nothing. its so weird i did it before. then i reformatted my notebook tried it without sp1 vista 32 then tried it with and tried xp I dont know I think that I am just unlucky. We will call this the “Blank Screen of Death” but everything else works Thanks for trin to help

Subcircuit September 11, 2009 at 4:36 am

someone told be to go into DFU mode to downgrade only problem is That i have Itunes 9, you cant downgrade from itunes 9 3.1 u have to reinstall itunes 8.02 but everytime i try that, it will give me an installation error saying files are missing try reinstalling the program towards the end of the installation. Dont go to ITUNES 9 everybody dont do it

Rohit September 11, 2009 at 8:49 am

@subcircuit yea that’s true moving to iTunes 9 is as good as inviting trouble.. I just hope you haven’t updated to 3.1 firmware. If you are a iPhone 3GS owner I suggest you read this:
http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/iphone-3gs-owners-do-not-dare-update-to-3-1/
However, once the new jailbreak tool is out (expected any time this week) all your worries should vanish. Will keep you updated.

TJ September 12, 2009 at 11:11 pm

Hi

I am having problems at the end of the jailbreak process.

I can downlaod jailbreak software to phone but once its done rebooting etc. nothing has changed.

I tried enabling restrictions and disabling them again and still no cydia.

Any advice?

Rohit September 14, 2009 at 10:40 am

@TJ Looking at the date when you have tried out the jailbreak am afraid in the first step your iPhone has updated or restored to 3.1 firmware. If this is the case then your jailbreak wont work.

Tap SETTINGS on your iPhone. Then select General >> About and check under VERSION if it reads 3.0 or 3.1.

If it is 3.1. Then you will have to wait for the iPhone dev team to release redsn0w for 3.1. Will give u a heads up wen its out.

TJ September 29, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I actually found this out when checking a friends iphone the other day.

Damnit!

Thanks anyway Rohit

Rohit September 29, 2009 at 5:35 pm

@TJ cheers!

Jason October 8, 2009 at 7:59 pm

I have a 3g that was running 2.2.1 (? i think?…. I upgraded it to 3.0 and jailbroke with redsnow 0.8. It worked fine for about a day, now all the sudden it will not get service for nothing. I’ve looked and looked… What do I need to do to get it working again? Thanks in advance!

Jason October 9, 2009 at 5:20 am

got it thanks anyway.

Rohit October 10, 2009 at 10:28 am

@Jason Glad that you got it working :)

drjena October 12, 2009 at 11:49 pm

hi Rohit, I was wondering, if I have a 3GS phone with 3.1.2 firmware what should I do to jailbreak it, I know the steps from your posts which i thank you a lot for, but when I do that the redsnow does not recognize the 3.1.2 firware so do I have to use the 3.0 firmware and if i did , how do I get the iphone updates to the 3.1.2, does itune allow me to do so again. Thank you for your help.

Rohit October 13, 2009 at 2:30 am

@drjena If you are on 3.1.2 firmware, you can use Blackra1n tool to jailbreak your iPhone. Here is the tutorial

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-your-iphone-firmware-3-1-2-using-blackra1n/

WARNING: Use the above tutorial only if you are not concerned about UNLOCK (i.e only if you intend to stay on your official carrier AT&T-US, o2-UK etc). If you jailbreak your iPhone 3.1.2 using Blacra1n your iPhone will lose it’s unlock ability)

However, if jailbreaking and installing CYDIA is the only thing you are concerned about then just use the link I provided you in this comment.

ralph November 3, 2009 at 8:33 am

did everything step by step appeared to work but cydia doesnt show up, checked every page and turned on and off and done the process 4 times any ideas

shelon November 10, 2009 at 8:20 am

Dear Rohit,
im a newbie. hav a 2g 3.0 iphone.was having problems with installing applications. kept saying dpkg error 2.found a website that said problem was cos i had both cydia and icy and to resolve the problem i needed to jailbrake the iphone again.have done so but iphone does not restart!i just have the apple logo showing. did i do something wrong? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Rohit November 10, 2009 at 8:51 am

@Shelon Are you on an official carrier (AT&T-US, o2-UK etc) or had you unlocked your iPhone and wer using a diff sim?

When you decided to rejailbreak you must have accidently updated to 3.1.2 firmware and also moved to a higher baseband 5.11.07.

To get off the Apple logo problem try this tutorial

http://iphonedownlow.com/?p=5

If after doing the above it doesn’t work then try this:

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/solution-if-iphone-is-stuck-on-apple-logo-after-installing-any-cydia-application/

Once you have solved the ’stuck on apple logo’ issue, use the following tutorial to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. (It’s quicker and easier)

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-unlock-your-iphone-5-11-07-baseband-using-blacksn0w/

shelon November 10, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Dear Rohit, thank u sooooo much4responding.im really stuck here. The iphone has come on now but has an itunes icon with the usb cable and i can only make emergency calls!

To ans your Qs above, the iphone was jailbroken before(im in Malawi-africa) ie was able to use diff sim. I did make sure that the firmware i used was iphone 1,1-3.0-7A341-restore.

Should i still go with your instructions above?
