How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware using Redsnow for windows/mac

by Rohit on June 20, 2009

(GUYS ULTRASN0W the unlock tool for iPhone 3G 3.0 is out!!!!.. First jailbreak your iPhone using the following steps in this post and once you are done jailbreaking head to the tutorial on how to unlock your iPhone 3G 3.0 using ultrasn0w – Click here for unlock tutorial )

Wohooo Jailbreak tool for windows is finally out!!!Its redsn0w. Please Note: This works even on the MAC.

1) Restore your iPhone OS to 3.0 firmware by using itunes 8.2. Here is the link to 3.0 firmware ipsw file. Once you are done downloading it, hold shift and click on restore from your iTunes (mac users: alt/option key + click on restore) and navigate to the ipsw file you just downloaded in order to restore your iPhone to 3.0 firmware. (Note: Use firefox/internet explorer and not safari to download the ipsw file, if not it will be downloaded as a ZIP file instead of IPSW)

2) Download Redsn0w (jailbreaking tool for windows) from any of the windows links on http://blog.iphone-dev.org/. I used

http://72.14.179.250/Downloads/redsn0w-win_0.7.1.zip.

Mac users download Redsnow from here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/247149113/redsn0w-mac_0.7.2.zip

3) Once you are done downloading, launch it and you will get the following screen. Now browse to the Original iPhone firmware OS 3.0 .ipsw file. If you haven’t already got it, you can download it from here. (Note: iPhone 2G users please check below for the ipsw link )

4) Redsn0w then checks if the .ipsw is valid. Click next.

5) Now redsn0w will automatically patch the original file. Click next when done.

6) i) On the following screen Check on Install Cydia option to jailbreak .

ii)Check on “Unlock” ONLY IF you are an iPhone 2G user to unlock.

(Reminder : iPhone 3g users please check on ONLY “install cydia” option)

7) On the following screen iPhone 2g users can provide the path to bl39.bin and bl46.bin files. iPhone 3g users press next and skip this step. (NOTE: iPhone 2G users please find the bl39.bin and bl46.bin files below)

8) On the following screen make sure that your iPhone is PLUGGED IN to the computer AND switched OFF and click “Next”.

9) Now the part where you have to pay rapt attention: On the next screen you will be presented with a set of instructions. Follow them carefully:

i) Hold “Power” button for 2 seconds

ii)Then while holding the Power button, you will now have to hold Home button too for 10 seconds.

iii)Then release Power button but keep holding Home button for about 30 seconds i.e till the installation begins.

10) The Jailbreak process will now begin. Once it’s done, the iPhone will reboot on its own and you will find cydia on it.

11) Congrats you have just jailbroken your dear iPhone :)

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR iPhone 2G USERS:

Please use this ipsw file in step 3:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

You will also need the following bootloader files in step 7

BL 3.9 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin
BL 4.6 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS : I tried jailbreak on WINDOWS 7 but redsn0w kept crashing. So I ran it in compatibility mode for windows xp and then ran it as an administrator. It worked!. Here’s how you do it

i) Right Click on Redsnow.exe

ii) Click on Properties

iii )Switch to Compatibility tab on the top.

iv) Check ” Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP ”

v) Start the application by right clicking on redsn0w. exe file and click on run as administrator

Hy this worked in the first go. You are the man. thanks

Ben June 20, 2009 at 2:22 pm

UPDATE: To people who have problems figuring out how to continue installing redsn0w because it asks for you to locate your IPSW firmware, (i wasn’t able to find mine, in winXP) I went here and downloaded this file: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=30D7BWES
I then proceeded to reopen redsn0w and I used that 230MB file from that link I just posted as the ‘IPSW’ file that redsn0w was asking for.
From then on everything went smoothly, it asked me if i wanted to install cydia and i was like, ‘HELLS YEA!’ …. hehehe…
I now have my mcleaner app back that i downloaded from cydia THANK YOU DEV TEAM! and other than that everything seems great now. Sometimes when i scroll through the menus on my 3G it looks like its gonna go slow but then it regains consciousness …. I hope it doesn’t run slow because its jailbroken. anyways I will be waiting along side the rest of us for the ultrasnow update. I use AT&T so maybe i wont need it.
THanks to Rohit for keeping us updated.
Peace be~

Brandon Whatley June 20, 2009 at 8:12 pm

will this work on 2g ipod touch?

hfolmt June 20, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Only problem I am having is the bluetooth audio is skipping. On phone calls everything is great.

Rohit June 20, 2009 at 8:19 pm

@Brandon

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS)

and

also the “iPod touch (first and second generation)”.

So YES it will :)

Ldordai June 20, 2009 at 11:29 pm

I’m about to try this, i have ATT service, and im a little confused as to what redsn0w is…if i don’t have redsn0w, will i not be able to use my iphone’s phone capabilites? Also, is redsn0w included in this jailbreak app?

I followed every step here until it said done but on my 2G iphone screen I have a logo of a hard drive with a green arrow and a caption saying Downloading Jailbreak Data….but it won’t go any further than that. Is there anything else I have to do?

Paul June 21, 2009 at 3:51 am

After waiting for almost 10 minutes my 2g Iphone screen now shows the logo of Itunes and the white cable that goes in the back of the iphone cradle.
Can anyone help me please?

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 6:34 am

@soheil Did you try downloading the .ipsw file from the link in step 3 and manually browsing the file.

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 6:39 am

@Donny The unlock tool (ultrasn0w) for iPhone running 3.0 firmware isn’t yet out. So will have to wait for it to work.

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 6:51 am

@Paul Seems like your phone is stuck at connect to iTunes screen. Did you update your iPhone or restore it? .. If you updated it, can you please restore your iPhone and try again.

Use Apple’s original 3.0 firmware. Here is the link to download it:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6578.20090617.VfgtU/iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.

Once downloaded, go to iTunes and Restore using “Shift”+”Restore” button and when asked select the .ipsw file that you just downloaded.

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 6:56 am

@hey thanks

@Ldordai REDSN0W itself is the jailbreak tool! You need to run it to enable 3rd party apps.

If you are an AT&T customer you have nothing to worry about. Once you are done jailbreaking you can use all the original functions of the iPhone and also an app called Cydia will appear on your phone from where you can install various third party applications.

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 6:57 am

@Chandira Am glad it worked for you :)

petah June 21, 2009 at 7:07 am

so i have a 2nd gen itouch and i did this step by step i finished it and there is no cydia. did i do something wrong?

petah June 21, 2009 at 7:19 am

okay so i figured what i did wrong but i finished again and its a black light and has a loading sign on the bottom. what do i do?

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 7:24 am

@petah If you have followed the above steps properly then you should have cydia on your iTouch.

In step 6 did you CHECK “install cydia” option?

Also one of the itouch users before had cydia installed but it appeared on the second screen of his iTouch springboard though there was room for apps to appear on the first screen.

If none of this is the case.. Then I am afraid you will have to just re-jailbreak.

Cam June 21, 2009 at 10:21 am

@Rohit & others

Have downloaded the “ipsw” file from a few links now and it seems to be a zip with a heap of files in it, but no ipsw file to use on redsn0w?

Do I need to compile an ipsw file from the zip downloaded from the link?

Cam June 21, 2009 at 10:32 am

Pwnage tool picked up the folder as an ipsw file.. is there something I’m missing here?

Rohit June 21, 2009 at 11:37 am

@cam this is the ipsw file: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6578.20090617.VfgtU/iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

You need to download it and navigate/browse to it when asked to in the 3rd step.

muhd sidek June 21, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Please Reply. I get to step 10 and redsn0w just stops working for me.

Kristine June 21, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I have downloaded the files exactly from the links provided. Im not getting the “Unlock” option in step 6. PLease help

Kristine June 21, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Also, can you please specify how long does each step take? Im past 10 mins stuck on the the “Please wait while your device is being jailbroken”
“waiting for reboot” part

Kristine June 21, 2009 at 2:29 pm

ok now i found where we went wrong. 2G users should DL the iphone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw file instead of iphone1,2… and also the 3.9 & 4.6 baseband bootloaders

MCH June 21, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Thanks, Mate! Worked like a charm. Kudos to you!
