How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware using Redsnow for windows/mac

by Rohit on June 20, 2009

(GUYS ULTRASN0W the unlock tool for iPhone 3G 3.0 is out!!!!.. First jailbreak your iPhone using the following steps in this post and once you are done jailbreaking head to the tutorial on how to unlock your iPhone 3G 3.0 using ultrasn0w – Click here for unlock tutorial )

Wohooo Jailbreak tool for windows is finally out!!!Its redsn0w. Please Note: This works even on the MAC.

1) Restore your iPhone OS to 3.0 firmware by using itunes 8.2. Here is the link to 3.0 firmware ipsw file. Once you are done downloading it, hold shift and click on restore from your iTunes (mac users: alt/option key + click on restore) and navigate to the ipsw file you just downloaded in order to restore your iPhone to 3.0 firmware. (Note: Use firefox/internet explorer and not safari to download the ipsw file, if not it will be downloaded as a ZIP file instead of IPSW)

2) Download Redsn0w (jailbreaking tool for windows) from any of the windows links on http://blog.iphone-dev.org/. I used

http://72.14.179.250/Downloads/redsn0w-win_0.7.1.zip.

Mac users download Redsnow from here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/247149113/redsn0w-mac_0.7.2.zip

3) Once you are done downloading, launch it and you will get the following screen. Now browse to the Original iPhone firmware OS 3.0 .ipsw file. If you haven’t already got it, you can download it from here. (Note: iPhone 2G users please check below for the ipsw link )

4) Redsn0w then checks if the .ipsw is valid. Click next.

5) Now redsn0w will automatically patch the original file. Click next when done.

6) i) On the following screen Check on Install Cydia option to jailbreak .

ii)Check on “Unlock” ONLY IF you are an iPhone 2G user to unlock.

(Reminder : iPhone 3g users please check on ONLY “install cydia” option)

7) On the following screen iPhone 2g users can provide the path to bl39.bin and bl46.bin files. iPhone 3g users press next and skip this step. (NOTE: iPhone 2G users please find the bl39.bin and bl46.bin files below)

8) On the following screen make sure that your iPhone is PLUGGED IN to the computer AND switched OFF and click “Next”.

9) Now the part where you have to pay rapt attention: On the next screen you will be presented with a set of instructions. Follow them carefully:

i) Hold “Power” button for 2 seconds

ii)Then while holding the Power button, you will now have to hold Home button too for 10 seconds.

iii)Then release Power button but keep holding Home button for about 30 seconds i.e till the installation begins.

10) The Jailbreak process will now begin. Once it’s done, the iPhone will reboot on its own and you will find cydia on it.

11) Congrats you have just jailbroken your dear iPhone :)

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR iPhone 2G USERS:

Please use this ipsw file in step 3:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

You will also need the following bootloader files in step 7

BL 3.9 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-39.bin
BL 4.6 : http://iphonefreakz.com/firmware/BL-46.bin

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WINDOWS 7 USERS : I tried jailbreak on WINDOWS 7 but redsn0w kept crashing. So I ran it in compatibility mode for windows xp and then ran it as an administrator. It worked!. Here’s how you do it

i) Right Click on Redsnow.exe

ii) Click on Properties

iii )Switch to Compatibility tab on the top.

iv) Check ” Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP ”

v) Start the application by right clicking on redsn0w. exe file and click on run as administrator

Dear Rohit, my itunes doesnt recognise my sim card.so not sure can use http://iphonedownlow.com/?p=5 should i go for the tutorial on the second link?

Rohit November 10, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Hi there! Now that your iPhone shows itunes icon with usb cable

Just use blackra1n to jailbreak your phone and blacksn0w to unlock. It will even hactivate your phone.

By the way, since you were able to use a different sim. It means you had unlocked your iPhone. (To unlock you must first jailbreak)

If you are confused about all this, I suggest you to jst restore your iPhone to the latest firmware 3.1.2 and then follow the instructions in the link below

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-unlock-your-iphone-5-11-07-baseband-using-blacksn0w/

If you want more clarity as to what jailbreaking and unlocking means. Read this

1)What do you mean by Jailbreaking an iPhone:

After purchasing your iPhone the only place that you can officially install applications from is the Apple app store. However, the Apple app store doesn’t always have all the solutions/applications due to various limitations imposed by Apple on developers. For eg: You can’t change themes on your iPhone, you can’t run voip applications over 3G etc. There are developers who know that users need such features on their iPhone. So they develop applications like WINTERBOARD(To change themes), VOIPOVER3G etc and make them available through CYDIA which is like another Appstore(Unofficial of course).

Now immediately after purchasing your iPhone you cannot access CYDIA. There is like a virtual JAIL/SHIELD preventing you from using other store(Cydia). So you need to BREAK THAT JAIL. This is nothing but Jailbreaking.

What do you mean by Unlocking an iPhone?

As we all know our iPhones are usable by default on only certain carriers i.e AT&T(US), O2(UK), Vivo(Brazil), Airtel/Vodafone(India) etc. This means that our iPhones are locked to a particular carrier. Now what IF the user wanted to use other carriers. What if he found the data plans/calling plans better on say T-mobile instead of AT&T, Orange instead of O2? That’s when you feel like getting rid of the carrier LOCK on your iPhone. This is nothing but UNLOCKING.

hi rohit, hope u well.im enjoying the iphone a little more now, but experiencing a little glitch.i cant seem to sync applications that i download on my itunes (on my PC),i can sync everything else, music, photos.im using itunes 9.0. it just says sycn complete without the apps. I can download directly from app store, but its a lot more expensive4me. Is there something i can do or i’m not doing rite?please help!

Rohit November 18, 2009 at 4:26 pm

@Shelon Did you check the box under the applications tab in itunes that says sync apps?

Many users forget to check that option.

Have you installed any cracked apps after jailbreaking from Appulo.us or similar sites?

shelon November 19, 2009 at 10:27 am

hi rohit, i did tick the box to sync app and i also unticked every where else eg photos, music so it didnt hav to sync every time. but nothing. i havnt installed any cracked applications, not even cydia. is this the problem? it will cost me nothing if i download through itunes as internet is free at work, u see. where as downloading directly using iphone, takes much longer and hence costly! :-(

shelon November 20, 2009 at 2:56 pm

@rohit,i dont know exactly what i did but, itunes said backing up,then synced all the apps. i’m the happiest chick alive yeeeeepeeeeeeeee. cheers rohit, hopefully this is the last from me. keep up the good work!:-)

Does anyone know if you can unlock and jailbreak an iPhone 4G? Either way I have the iPhone 3GS and I love it but I’m tempted to upgrade to the iPhone 4G but something has been keeping me from doing it but I just might upgrade even though it’s got some probs. If I can jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 4G I just might. What do you think?

Rohit August 18, 2010 at 5:40 pm

@fixyourtunes @DRAR @ Everyone

Here is a complete tutorial on how to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 using the new jailbreak tool.

http://www.digitalmarketingtalk.com/iphone/how-to-jailbreak-and-unlock-iphone-4-and-iphone-3gs/

Please make sure you are either on iPhone firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3 or 4, 4.0.1. If you have updated your iPhone to 4.0.2, the jailbreak method wont work.

It is rare for me to discover something on the cyberspace thats as entertaining and fascinating as what you have got here. Your page is sweet, your graphics are outstanding, and whats much more, you use source that are relevant to what you’re talking about. You’re definitely one in a million, good job!
