How to enable iPhone 3GS voice control on 3G & 2G

by Rohit on October 20, 2009

The folks at spaziocellulare have released a Voice Control look-alike app for iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G.If you are wondering what Voice Control is all about; let’s turn to Apple’s description

Voice Control can find anybody in your contacts list. Simply say a name to make a call. Or say a phone number. iPhone repeats your voice commands to confirm them, then dials away. It knows the music in your iPod, too. Ask your iPhone what song is playing (and hear it answer). Tell it to play your favorite album. Even have it play more songs like the one you’re listening to.

This tutorial will install an app which almost mimics all the functions of Voice control. Have fun using it!

1) Make sure you are on a Jailbroken iPhone.

2) Download WinSCP on Windows or Cyberduck on MAC.

3) If you haven’t yet installed OpenSSH on your iPhone. Do it straightaway.

  • In Cydia tap on search button at the bottom and then look for ‘OpenSSH’.
  • Install OpenSSH and restart your iPhone.

4) OpenWinSCP on Windows or Cyberduck on a Mac and enter the following details to login to your phone:

  • Hostname: The IP address of your iPhone. (Settings > WiFi > Your Network Name)
  • User name: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SCP

5) After logging in, browse to ‘/<root>/Applications’ directory on your iPhone.

6) Download VoiceControl.zip. Once you are done downloading it,  extract ‘Voice Control.app’ and copy it to your iPhone in this directory: ‘/<root>/Applications’

7) After copying, right-click on “Voice Control.app” , then choose Properties and change the permission to 755. Also check on Set group, owner and permissions recursively option:

8 ) Congrats you just installed ‘Voice Control’ (look alike) on your iPhone 2G/3G. Now you just need to use your voice to make a call or to play music. No more envying 3GS owners :)
