How to downgrade the baseband of your iPhone 3G 3.1

by Rohit on September 19, 2009

This tutorial is for those folks who have accidently upgraded their iPhone to firmware 3.1 directly via iTunes. On doing this, the users have also unknowingly updated their modem(baseband) firmware to 05.11.07 from 04.26.08. Such an update, results in the loss of unlock ability. So in order to have it back, one needs to downgrade their baseband firmware.

Please note the following points before you use this tutorial :

  • Downgrading only works on phones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader from the factory. This is a very limited number of phones that were released in the first few weeks of the 3G production cycle.
  • If you do not know your bootloader then you can run Fuzzyband and it will report the version number for you. (Explained below)
  • Downgrading works from any version greater than 4.26.08. It will put your baseband back at version 4.26.08 which is the current unlockable version by ultrasn0w.

.

Once you have read the above 3 points carefully, follow the instructions below to downgrade baseband(modem) firmware from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08.

1) Jailbreak your iPhone 3G 3.1 using PwnageTool 3.1. Here is the tutorial: Link (For the downgrade to work, your iPhone should be running jailbroken 3.1 firmware)

2) Once you have jailbroken your iPhone, tap on cydia.

3) Select search at the bottom of cydia and in the search box look for Fuzzyband.

4) Install Fuzzyband.

5) Open Fuzzband application and and tap on Downgrade button to downgrade your Baseband from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08.

REMINDER: Downgrading the baseband will only work on iPhones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader from the factory. If you do not know your bootloader then you can run Fuzzyband and it will report the version number.

6) Congrats! Now that you have downgraded your iPhone from baseband firmware 05.11.07 to 04.26.08, you can easily unlock your iPhone 3G.

7) Use this tutorial to unlock iPhone 3G 3.1 firmware. Link.

Update: You no longer need to downgrade to 04.26.08 to be able to unlock your iPhone. Thanks to GeoHot’s new unlock tool called Blacksn0w you can now unlock your iPhone even if you are on 05.11.07 baseband(modem) firmware.

all this posting about being able to downgrade baseband 05.11.07 is a joke I read that a very very very few have the baseband that can be downgraded with fuzzyband. fuzzyband didnt work for me

Rohit September 21, 2009 at 5:38 am

@Jose Am sorry about the fact that FuzzyBand didn’t work for you. I didn’t want to give false hopes to reader’s of my blog, so unlike other sites, I have mentioned right at the beginning of the post that the tutorial works only on few phones.

“Downgrading only works on phones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader from the factory. This is a very LIMITED NUMBER of phones that were released in the first few weeks of the 3G production cycle”

Anyways, I will let you know if there is a new downgrade solution out.

No need to apologize for those who fail at reading your topic completely and think they are the exception to the guidelines presented to them.

I find your blog more direct and useful than others I read on iphone topics. Keep up the good work. And hope that a solution presents itself soon that might fix my own 3.1 issue.

my 3g 2.0 IPONE jail broken & unlocked long back and up graded to3.0.1 and JB with redsn0w & unlocked with ultrasn0w.but few days back my phone locked when downloading some software.after that i up graded my phone to 3.1 from itunes 9 and modem(baseband) firmware to 05.11.07.my phone was locked and lost all data.then i went for restore.at lost iwas able to downgrade my phone to 3.0 ,and is jail broken but could not unlock.getting (no service)older modem firmware is 04.26.08.please somebody help in unlocking my phone.i am from INDIA using AIRTEL sim.(iphone was bought form europe.

Rohit September 22, 2009 at 12:06 pm

@Nagesh After downgrading your iPhone from 3.1 to 3.0.1 what is your modem(baseband) firmware?

Please go to settings > General > About on your iPhone and then check the modem firmware number. If it is 04.26.08, then you can still unlock your iPhone. However, if it’s 05.11.07; you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone.

Many folks are having the same problem and are waiting for a new solution. All I can do at this point is ask you to play the waiting game Nagesh. Don’t worry, it should be out soon and you will be able to use your European iPhone on airtel, vodafone, docomo or any other carrier again.

@Jose cheers!

Tom September 24, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Rohit, how sure are you that Dev-team is coming with a solution in fixing the unlock ability with redsn0w? I am asking this because other people somehow guaranteed that Apple made unlocking impossible with Iphones using baseband 05.11.07 after upgrading the firmware to 3.1, that there is no solution coming. Please share you thoughts about these people making wild assumptions.

I am waiting several weeks for a solution and i was starting to lose hope with my 3.1 situation. I was so desperate that I was thinking about selling my unlockable Iphone to some dumb kid with no clue whatsoever, till I read your blog.

Just as John I must give my compliments to you Rohit, for having the most clear and usefull Iphone blog in the world.

Rohit September 24, 2009 at 5:57 pm

@Tom To be very frank what others are telling aren’t wild assumptions. The Dev Team has been repeatedly requesting iPhone users not to upgrade to 05.11.07 baseband by updating 3.1 directly via iTunes. They have also warned that people will lose their unlock ability forever.

However, this has always been the case with the Dev Team. They totally lower your expectations and finally when you have all given up, they release a fix.

Think about it there are thousands of users out there who are now on 05.11.07 baseband and are plaguing the dev team forums requesting for a solution. I am sure all those requests aren’t falling on deaf ears.

Now all this is a very optimistic view of things and I still cant 100% guarantee that there will be a solution. We can just hope for the best. One thing I can assure you though is that when such a solution is out, you will be one of the very first people to know abt it.

By the way thanks for the kind words. Such a feedback always encourages to make this blog even better.

NOTE: iPhone 2G and 3G users are more likely to get a fix than the iPhone 3GS users. That’s because of the ECID complication.

Hey. Thank you for this blog, its easy understandable and a great help. I am one of those stupid idiots who upgraded to 3.1 in iTunes and is stuck with i locked phone (bootloader 6.2), I cant use to anything. I was wondering if there is some place to sign up for a newsletter, so IF dev team come with a solution i will get the news asap?
M!

Rohit September 26, 2009 at 1:04 pm

@Michael Stauer

Thanks for the compliment. I know how annoying it gets when your iPhone loses the unlock ability. I really hope a solution is out very soon.

Dougie September 30, 2009 at 2:06 am

Hi i have the iphone 3GS and updated to the 3.1 firmware through itunes, i know that you can not get that jailbroken and unlocked. but is it still possible to unlock though the carrier?
thanks

Rohit September 30, 2009 at 7:58 am

@Dougie I am sorry but your question is very vague. However, since you have mentioned that you have updated to 3.1 firmware on your 3GS iPhone, there is NO WAY to unlock (Atleast for the time being).

Raku October 2, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Rohit,

Nice job, easy and clear!!! thx for give us exactly information about how fXXed are the idiots like me that upgrade to baseband 05.11.07….If i expended 5 minutes on reading correct tutorials i still have my 3G Iphone running…. :(
Thx for your job, hope that dev’s guys work fast.

Diane October 3, 2009 at 3:41 pm

how did you find out the bootloader on your iphone? I have the same problem and waiting to unlock the phone. Thanks

Rohit October 4, 2009 at 7:25 pm

@Raku Thanks mate! & yea fingers crossed, hope dev team release a fix soon.

Rohit October 4, 2009 at 7:28 pm

@Diane After installing fuzzyband from cydia. You have an option within fuzzyband to check the bootloader.

I have mentioned this in the tutorial

“If you do not know your bootloader then you can run Fuzzyband and it will report the version number for you.” :)

Mark October 11, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Hi Rohit….great blog…very clear and concise!

I’m on Snow Leopard. I upgraded to 3.1 on my 3G iphone. At the time i wasn’t interested in JB’ing or unlocking my phone. However my GPS has stopped working. It stopped working when I upgraded to 3.0. Apple can’t help me although they spent an hour on the phone with me trying to. I’m out of warranty, and the insurtance I pay each month for the phone doesn’t cover faults. (GRRR!!!) I found solutions online about resetting network settings etc…but they did not get my GPS working again. I have found a solution now that needs a terminal window running on the iphone….so I need to JB. This “fix” empties the GPS cache and allows the GPS chip to “start a fresh” and has worked for so many.

Thing is, now i want to JB…and unlock, as i will probably pass this phone to my father when i upgrade to the next iphone (Not 3Gs though…the next version)

I don’t want to make the wrong move here. i have read so many conflicting reports about JB’ing at this point in time….and losing forever the option to unlock. To be clear: My baseband is 05.11.07 and I know at present that is a huge problem to unlock.(read as not an option) But I found this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd7hBP9gJoM and now your blog that suggests that i can unlock if my bootloader is 5.08.

My 3G was purchased the day Apple released it (12 July 2008?), so I’m hoping that the bootloader has not been upgraded by Apple with updated through itunes.

Do you know if Apple did upgrade the bootloader in updates in software?…or is my iphone stuck at bootlaoder 5.08 out of the factory (if it is indeed 5.08)

Do you think it safe to JB at this point in time….or wait?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Also….I’m on O2 in the UK. Would any O2 sim work in my iphone…i.e. is the phone locked to MY sim…or just the networ?

Thanks again!

mark

Mark October 11, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Hi Rohit…

With the advice of your blog….I have sucessfully JB’d my 3G and also unlocked my phone because the bootloader is 5.8.

So happy!!!!

Thanks!

mark

Rohit October 11, 2009 at 4:07 pm

@Mark I am so glad that it worked for you Mark. Congrats! By the way your iPhone is locked to the network and not the sim. So you can use any o2 sim card without unlocking.

Anyways NOW that you have unlocked your iPhone, you can use any carrier sim :).. Thanks for all the compliments.

Mark October 14, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Hi Rohit…

Hope you plan on doing a guide!

Prasad October 19, 2009 at 10:10 am

Hi Rohit,

I recently bought an iPhone 3GS in the US which came factory loaded with Version 3.1 (7C144) and Modem Firmware 05.11.07. I do not know the bootloader version. I have been reading a lot of these tutorials on jailbreaking and unlocking but haven’t attempted anything yet, not even registered my phone via iTunes. I want to jailbreak and unlock so that I can use it on a network in India like Airtel or Vodafone. Looks like this baseband doesn’t have an unlock yet. What would you suggest I do?

Thank you,

Rohit October 19, 2009 at 10:48 am
Rohit October 19, 2009 at 10:53 am

@Prasad If you are coming to India for good I suggest you sell your iPhone off ebay coz an unlock solution for Modem Firmware 05.11.07 is not on the cards (atleast in the near future).

On the other hand, if it’s just for a few weeks then your best bet would be to use a diff phone in India. I know it’s annoying that you can’t use ur iPhone that you are so addicted to. I have been in similar situation before and it sucks to say the least.

Anyways, I will give u a heads up if there is something else that can be done.

Prasad October 19, 2009 at 11:13 am

Rohit,

Thanx for the swift reply. I am already in India for good, so I will play around and see what happens.

Dianne October 25, 2009 at 10:57 am

Rohit, please help me…i have iphone 3GS version 3.1.2 baseband 05.11.07 we allready jailbreak it but we can’t unlocked..is there anyway to unlcoked our iphone? pLeassssssssssssssss give me answer..is there anybody can help me..

Rohit October 25, 2009 at 12:58 pm

@Dianne I am afraid there is NO possible way to unlock an iPhone which is on 05.11.07 yet. So, nobody can help you at the moment :( I totally understand your frustration.. There are tons of users like you waiting for a new solution which can help them unlock their 05.11.07 baseband iPhone.

I really hope that the Dev Team and GeoHot give this a high priority and help everyone out.

Will give you an update if that happens.

uriel_c October 28, 2009 at 1:08 am

Hi Rohit,

Several sites promise a “guaranteed” way to unlock an iPhone with 05.11.07 baseband. All they ask is $30. Is it possible that they know something that the Dev Team and GeoHot couldn’t solve (yet)?

Are you aware of any ways to resolve such an issue?
This is driving me mental;

Seems that inadvertantly updating the modem baseband has screwed it :s

Hi,

I accidently updated my iphone 2G in Itunes 9.1 and the phone got locked. It just shows the screen where you can dial the emergency number. I tried many jailbreaking and unlocking softwares like Redsnow, Snowbreeze, Blackra1n on Windows but with no luck. With Snowbreeze when I try to restore to the custom firmaware iTunes fails with 1600 error. I tried using iREB to get around this error but the white screen never turns up.
Is there any other technique to get resolve this problem. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I currently have an iphone 3G with 3.1.2. and baseband (04.26.08). I want to upgrade the baseband to 05.11.07. I want to know the difference between the basebands. I am more concerned about the battery life than anything else. Just want to know if one baseband will drain the battery faster than the other.

Thanks in advance!
