This will come as a pleasant news to all those planning to get an iPhone in the UK when Orange starts selling it on November 10th.

O2 head Matthew Key told the Times Online that customers will be free to move to other operators once the contract expires.
we will allow O2 customers to unlock their iPhones, although of course they will still need to honour any outstanding contract period they have. At the end of their contract period, they are entirely free to move to another operator — though naturally we hope they won’t want to!
Of course, we should point out here that iPhone is not exclusive to O2 in UK. Vodafone will start selling iPhone early next year. The same should be expected of Vodafone as well and don’t mistake this to be some sort of generosity by these companies. They are obligated to do so under the EU law.
People in US can only envy at the choice given to UK customers and other folks around the world or pray that iPhone lands up in Verizon’s kitty next year.
