Intel’s Atom chip may not have made it’s mark in the mobile internet device(MID) and smartphone markets but that hasn’t dettered them from planning a release of another Atom chip (Moorestown) in 2010. Only this time around it will be much more power efficient. Here’s the official Intel description of Moorestown:
Intel’s second-generation MID platform, which consists of a System on Chip (codenamed ‘Lincroft’) that integrates a 45nm Intel Atom processor core, graphics, video and memory controller. The platform also includes an input/output (I/O) hub, codenamed ‘Langwell,’ that includes a range of I/O blocks and supports wireless solutions.
iPhone users understand the importance of having a longer battery life. This can be easily achieved with the new Atom chip. However, those who kept track of P.A. Semi’s acquisition by Apple know that the chances of an iPhone running on Intel Atom are very slim since Apple is getting into chip development on it’s own.
The image of the Apple branded chip above, confirms this and lays out the fact that Apple indeed is in direct competition with Intel’s Atom. The year 2010 will see the two Tech Giants battle it out for the chip glory. We hope that the best Giant wins!
